Suddenly horse

This horse, slight in stature, lies in a profound silence and its eye is still open. Photographed from above, its repose becomes even more absolute. Its final gaze seems suspended somewhere between earth and sky. Shadows settle across its body, while a faint light catches the open eye. That eye no longer speaks of life, but of a presence that lingers after life has only just departed. Frail and motionless, the horse remains fixed on the meadow where it will never run again. The stillness of the body and the wakefulness of the eye do not simply tell a story of death. They preserve the exhausted grandeur of a body once made for motion. The photograph asks us to meet its gaze—to look into that open eye and witness a wakefulness that has become eternal in this black-and-white photograph.
