Mehran MohajerVertical Horizon
The stairs are the stairs of Mellat Park. Of course, in the year 1355 (1976), the year the photographer took the picture, this park was not Mellat Park [people’s park], and even today, I don’t know whether it still is or not. The photographer has rotated the stairs and glued together ten pieces of these pictures. So the stairs have turned and become adjacent to each other, and in the end, they have formed a column. And people no longer go up or down the stairs. People revolve around the column. Our column reminds us of the columns of our
ancient history. Strange enough, the photographer, by this collage of
geography, has de-territorialized the place and at the same time takes us to
history. And today, when we look at the photograph, this history is both the
past history and the future history. The history around the column in the photograph
is always becoming. Each time we look, in our past, present, and future
history, we revolve around the column.
Even if we take our eyes away from this picture, the vertical horizon will
not be erased from our minds.
